As 2015 quickly jumps out at us, I want to pause and look back at what an amazing year 2014 was by highlighting pictures from some of my photo shoots and personal work from over the past year. I started off the year as big as a boat (well, I at least felt that way) as I was pregnant with my first child. I did get to start 2014 off with an amazing “Babymoon” trip, to the warm beach of Miami! Below is a picture of the start of the 2014 New Year with fireworks on the Biscayne Bay, and me chilling on Miami Beach on January 1st, 2014.
Unable to spend much time on my feet I was doing very little photography the first few months other then a couple of baby, boudoir, and engagement sessions. Oh wait, but I did walk on slippery ice (with ice cleats) and lay on the frozen ground for this awesome couple photo shoot below that I could not pass up doing at the ice castles in Breckenridge. I think someone even applauded at one point after witnessing me laying on my back in the snow to get just the right angle. It was early January, I may have been 7 months pregnant but I was still mobile, and had to the get the best shot.
Another amazing photo shoot I managed to squeeze in before my baby came was photography of performance artists and aerialists at a Valentines party hosted by a local Burning Man camp at The Oriental Theater in Denver. It was a lot of fun but I do remember being quite exhausted by the end of the night. Yet I was so thankful that I made it out (past midnight even!) and captured these fun unique pictures.
And then on March 15, 2014 my beautiful baby was born. My whole world changed and all of a sudden I had my most demanding client ever, haha! Seriously, this girl was so hard to shoot as a newborn, it took 3 sessions just to get some good pictures. Definitely not easy as a first time exhausted mother. Next time I’m hiring a newborn photographer to do it for me…while I sleep. 😉 Here’s my cutie at only 9 days.
I took some time off for maternity leave but was really excited when my first wedding of the season came up at the end of May. Here’s a picture from my first wedding back to work. Not your traditional wedding picture, but I love how the mothers of the bride and groom are joining hands. I remember I got a little emotional during this part of the ceremony as I thought back to my own wedding and the importance of joining families, and how I now had a new family member of my own.
OK, and just because this couple was so great to work with here’s another one showing how much fun they had at their reception at Kevin Taylor’s at the Opera House.
Now that I have a baby it puts a whole different perspective on photographing other people’s babies. Now I understand how challenging it is to catch that happy time between nap and a feeding. And now I truly understand how fast those first few months go and how important it is to capture those quickly passing moments! Below is Shelby, the baby of a couple whom I have been photographing from their engagement, to wedding, maternity, newborn, and now 6 month baby pictures. And it happened so fast! And check out this her 1 year pictures at the bottom of this post.
And its also nice to now be able to share birth stories and pass on advice to other nervous expectant mothers. Here is a fun picture of a pregnant couple I photographed in Cheeseman Park this summer.
I traveled all over Colorado for engagement pictures this year from Breckenridge to Evergreen, and of course lots in my favorite city of Denver.
A few more baby pictures of my sweet angel, taken throughout the summer and fall in Colorado.
For the first time since I started my business six years ago I stopped all paid advertising and passed on bridal shows so I wouldn’t overwhelm myself with too many weddings as a first time mom. It worked out nicely as the beginning of my summer I was able to take it easy with mostly just portrait and engagement sessions while I adjusted to being a mom. Yet I still got a lot of bookings through referrals and by August I was extremely busy with weddings. Thankfully I had found a few good babysitters by then to give myself time to stay on top of all the editing and production.
I also did a few business portraits, or fun headshots, for some new and returning clients.
Colorado was blessed with a long colorful fall and a mild winter at the end of the year, which allowed me to do a lot more outdoor portrait sessions through December, particularly lots of engagement photo shoots….
Also, with the announcement of Colorado legalizing same sex marriages in October I saw a surge in wedding inquiries from gays and lesbians. I have always been a firm believer in equal love and equal laws for all, so I was quite excited about this news myself and more then happy to document the engagement of these same sex couples below.
The end of the year meant it was time for family portraits. Here is that cutie Shelby again, this time for her 1st birthday picture, now walking with mom and dad. So crazy to think just a year ago when photographing her as a newborn she couldn’t even roll over, or do anything yet. For her six month baby pictures she was able to sit-up for pictures, and now just a few months later she was talking (well babbling) and walking with the help of her parents.
Family holiday portraits in downtown Denver.
And a quick picture of my own babies’ 1st Christmas.
When the holidays came around we made it back home to New Orleans for lots of family visits, Cajun food, Southern hospitality, and of course a necessary dose of live music.
And just a fun one to end with…a view from the top of the Denver Clocktower downtown on 16th St. Mall. This year reminded me of how blessed I am to have my family, especially the newest addition to my family. And of course I’m also so lucky to live in the amazing city of Denver. Can’t wait to see what 2015 has in store for me next!
