New Orleans Photography- St. Patricks Day

There is no doubt about it, New Orleans knows how to throw a party!  And in a city with its own Irish Channel & plenty of authentic Irish pubs & Irish descendants, it certainly has to be one of the best places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.   New Orleans hosts about half a dozen parades the weekend of St.Patrick’s Day.  And since I missed Mardi Gras this year, I was very excited to be in town to catch the Uptown Irish Channel Parade, which ran on Saturday March 16th.   The four hour parade slowly makes its way through the Uptown neighborhood down the beautiful oak tree lined streets of Magazine & St. Charles.  The family friendly parade is filled with large decorated floats, Irish dancers, and lots of men passing out plastic roses in exchange for a kiss.  Lots of neighborhood residents cook cabbage casseroles, pass out green beer, and open their homes to the parade revelers. A large neighborhood block party goes on all day and everyone leaves with a neck full of green beads, a bag full of cabbage & a huge smile on their face.

After the parade ends a great place to grab a bite to eat and sit down for a bit is at the Irish House on St.Charles Ave. If you want to meet some folks from Ireland, hear some real Irish music, or learn how to dance an Irish jig, then this is a great place to end the St.Patrick’s Day celebration.
